POWER PLANT
EVANS BAY STATION
MACHINERY ARRIVING
A difficult transportation task is to be undertaken by a Willing ion carrying firm next week wh«a approximately 100 tons of machinery from England by the Akaroa will be taken to the Evans Bay power station. The machinery is the second consignment of material for the extension of the municipal electricity generating station and a third consignment will arrive shortly. The work of erecting the machinery will occupy several months, but the city electricity department expects to have the new plant available for the peak demand next winter. The shipment by the Akaroa, which is due at Wellington on Saturday, is composed of about 69 cases, of which the largest, containing a generator weighing 28 tons 15cwt, measures approximately 13ft long and > Bft 6in square. This will be the most difficult "parcel" to handle and the use of the Harbour Board's floating crane, Hikitea, has been considered to transport it to the Miramar Wharf. However, half a mile of haulage would still have to be undertaken from there, so it is considered advisable to take the cases from the wharves to the station by road. The unloading of the machinery is not likely to take place until about the middle of next week.
