BUT IMPROVING TOMORROW
Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong1 southerly winds, reaching: gale force at times. Weather dull, misty, and squally, with heavy showers probable. The forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for south-westerly to southerly winds prevailing. These will be moderate to strong generally and will rise in places to gale force. The weather will be cold, changeable, and squally, with showers in most districts, and some hail is probable in coastal areas. Conditions, however, should commence to improve from tomorrow. A complex depression which covered the Dominion during the weekend had by this morning commenced to move away eastwards, and the area of lowest pressure now lies to the east of Cook Strait. Moderate to strong southerly winds have predominated. These on Saturday reached gale force in places in the central area, but by Sunday they had moderated somewhat, and this morning there was a temporary change to westerlies about and to the north of Cook Strait. The weather hns been cold, dull, and misty in most districts. Kain has been fairly widespread, with some heavy falls in various parts of the country. During Saturday and Sunday, however, it was mainly fair to fine on the West Coast and in the south of the South Island. Auckland hnd a fresh southerly wind and showery conditions on Saturday. Sunday's weather was mostly dull with a fresh south-westerly wind, and it was still overcast this morning, when a westerly breeze was blowing. Wellington had very unsettled weather during the weekend. A strong south-easterly wind blew all day on Saturday and was accompanied by frequent showers. A fairly steady drizzle during the night brought the total rainfall for the 24 hours ending at 9 a,m. on-Sunday up to 52 points, Sunday's weather was just as bad, being dull and misty with almost continuous light rain which added another 31 points to the weekend total. A fresh south-easterly wind blew yesterday morning, but in the afternoon it moderated, and by evening there was a calm. At 11,30 p.m. a light northerly set in. The sunshine recorder was not called upon to do any work at all during the weekend. Christchurch had cold and dull weather on Saturday with a strong southwesterly wind. Rain began to fall about 4.30 p.m. and continued all night, 70 points being recorded by 9 a.m. on Sunday. Yesterday's weather was also cold, dull, and, showery, a strong south-westerly wind blowing all day. A south-westerly breeze was blowing there this morning and rain was falling. ] Dunedin's wealher on Saturday was f mostly fair, with light and variable- 1 winds. On Sunday jt wa s dull and r misty with occasional rain, and a strong south-westerly was blowing. At c 9 a.m. today the weather was still ' overcast and showery. • (■
