RUGBY FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON UNION

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

Further awards of lower grade championships for the 1936 season were made at a meeting of the Wel^ lington Rugby Union's management committee last night as follows:— Fourth (first division), Petone; fifth, Hutt; sixth, Petone; seventh (first division), Petone. It was decided to receive at a meeting in February a deputation from the Wellington and Hutt Valley Primary Schools Rugby Unions, which propose to make representations regarding grants by the New Zealand Rugby Union for primary schools' Rugby. Advice was received from the Pirates Rugby Football Club (Wellington) that a quadrangular tournament of Pirates clubs would be held at Napier at Easter. This tournament was to be an annual event, and at a conference held at Palmerston North recently it was decided that Wellington should be the venue for the tournament in 1940. It was desired that the Wellington Union should grant the use of Athletic Park for the tournament.—The committee decided to reply that the Wellington Union was willing to assist, but could not at this early date make any commitments for the 1940 season owing to the Centenary celebrations thtt year. Mr. F. H. Cotton wrote from Aitutaki, Cook Islands, under date October 14: "I wish to thank you for your kindness in sending me the copies of the referees' handbook and the books on coaching. The rule books are very useful indeed, as there are some here who are very weak on the rules of Rugby. I have given several lectures from the book to the referees and players of the island, and am at present engaged in coaching the local representative team to go to Rarotonga next month to play a series of matches there, and also have the . schoolboys hard at it, as they will accompany the party to play the Rarotonga schools, if there is sufficient in the union's coffers. I expect New Zealand players were very pleased at the success of New Zealand teams against the Australians. The Maoris here took a keen interest in the results."
