COSTLY CONSIDERATION
One of Sydney's leviathan bookmakers will, not forget Wotan's Melbourne Cup" in a hurry, not so much because he actually lost straight out on the race, but because an act, almost of mercy, cost him well over £500.
Before the Epsom and Metropolitan, an old country client sent him £5 for a double, one leg of which was a very unlikely starter. The bookmaker wrote back informing the backer of the position, and told him that he could have another pick, could have his money back by cheque, or could leave it in credit. Back came the answer: "I'll have £500 to £5 Wotan in the Melbourne Cup." And,,not satisfied with that bet, he wired another <£2 10s each way.
