STRIKE AT WAIROA

CONDITIONAL OFFER

INQUIRY BY MINISTER

(By Telegraph—J'ress AssociationJ

WAIROA, This Day.

Following a conference on Monday afternoon between representatives of the General Labourers' Union and the works committee of the Wairoa Borough^Council the general secretary of the Hawke's Bay Labourers' Union made the offer on behalf of the council outside employees who have been on strike for a fortnight that they would return to work yesterday on conditions which were operating when they ceased work pending an investigation of the men's grievances by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) when he visits the district. These are said to be the same conditions offered the men by the Mayor on the morning that they decided to cease work except that an investigation is now to be made by the Minister of Labour instead of by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple), who is visiting the district this week. As suggested by the Mayor, men who were appointed to the permanent staff after the strike are to retain those positions. As a net result of the strike the men involved have lost two weeks' work, but a considerable sum of money collected in the town has been distributed by way of relief, in addition to which, it is understood, a general union levy is being made throughout Hawke's Bay and advice was received today by the employment office that one week's sustenance is to be paid to the mon affected.
