STUDENTS AND TRAM FACILITIES
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l desire to bring to the notice of those concerned the incomplete arrangements of the Tramways authorities for conveying the large numbers of scholars who find themselves planted each morning at the railway terminus, faced with the immediate problem of getting to schools and colleges with the utmost safety and expediency. In particular I refer to those students of the Wellington Technical College who arrive at Lambton Station between 8.20 and 8.30 a.m. The one waiting tram, a Wallace Street, No. 6, passes near the college, and represents the sole means of these students reaching school in time. There are, of course, trams leaving from Lambton Quay, but these do not pass near the college. The majority of those arriving by train use these trams, but there are quite a number who board the Wallace Street car, with the regular body of students who have no alternative means of transport. Thesa students arc required
to observe college regulations when travelling, and to remain together under the supervision of a specially-ap-pointed monitor. Travel is not entirely free to them. Surely in the particular case I refer to, their number might be taken to justify more adequate conveyance. The overcrowding on this tram is very noticeable. The platforms at both ends of the car are used to accommodate the overflow. Heavy school bags and sports equipment do not ease the congestion. This appeal is addressed on behalf of the students. —I am, etc., N.J.D.
