CORN SACK IMPORTS

WHY NOT OF FLAX ?

New Zealand imports of corn sacks from India will vary with the crop prospects, but last year they amounted to 5780 bales of 250 sacks to the bale and to 7367 bales for 1934. The sack holds about three bushels of wheat, but the weights and sizes imported vary, sizes being as follows: —48in x 26' 2 in, 2 7-81b; 46in x 261 in, 251b; 44in x 26>',in, 2 5-81b. The materials of all three sacks are the same. Australia has a standardised wheat sack 41in x 23in, 2,',1b. of lighter weight than used in New Zealand, and its imports for 1935 were 152,781 bales. The question has been asked by some in. the wheat trade why New Zealand could not standardise its wheat sack as Australia has done, and use New Zealand flax in its fabrication. Whatever may be the outcome of the investigations understood to be in progress as to the suitability of the New Zealand flax pack for wool, it would seem to the lay mind that no objection save any difference in cost could be raised against the use of New Zealand phormium fibre for wheat sacks. It might also be used for cement bags, of which 3210 bales were imported last year. Unless exported filled with wheat, the grain sack used in New Zealand can be used for flour, and it is used for potatoes and other articles until so long as its "life" lasts. Cost may largely enter into the question of a standardised flax sack for wheat,, but it is well known that the landed cost of jute wool packs, owing to low prices ruling in Calcutta, is much under the price-of the New Zealand pack, the sale of which in the proportion of one to two jute packs is now compulsory. ~ ~|' DIVIOENDS DUE. , Mosglef Woollen—-final 0 per cent., making 10 per cent, per annum Nov. li Bruce Woollen—pref. 5 8-0 per cent.; ord. 3 percent Nov. 1!> Anthony Hordcrn, Ltd., Sydney— prcf., 7Ms per cent, per annum (less statutory reduction) ; ord. . 4 per cent. per. annum Nov. li Mark Foy—Half-yearly, ord. and prcf., « per cent.
