THE 1880 ACCIDENT
A similar but more serious accident occurred on the same part of the Wairarapa line on September 1,1880, when the morning train from the Wairarapa district to Wellington was struck by a sudden gust of terrific force at a place called "Siberia," on the northern side of the Rimutakas. Several carriages were blown- off the rails, four people were killed outright, and many others were injured. In order to minimise the possibility of future disasters, a breakwind was erected between two of the tunnels, and two Fell locomotives, one at each end of the train, made assurance doubly sure.
