TO WANGANUI

"BUT WASTE OF

MONEY "

MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT

(By Telegraph.— IVphs Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The young man who was arrested in an Auckland hotel on Saturday dressed as a girl, Phillip Walter Darcy Stewart, was remanded to appear at Wanganui on October 5 to answer a charge of theft of a car, valued at £230, the property of Jack Herbert Luxford, of Wanganui.

Counsel for Stewart submitted that the charge should be reduced to one of unlawful conversion, and also that the case should be heard summarily at Auckland. He said that Stewart, who is 19 years of age, just beyond the juvenile age, was pleading guilty.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that the police were not prepared to reduce the charge. All the witnesses were at Wanganui. "He admits stealing the car to sell it to get money to go to Sydney," he said. "Some property left by the owner in the car was thrown into the Wanganui River and this probably will be the subject of another Charge." The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M-, explained that the charge was an indictable one and that he must grant the application for a remand to Wanganui. "All the same, I agree with you that it will be a waste of public money," added Mr. Hunt. "It would, be much better to deal with it now and let him get back to his work. The whole case could be dealt with here in Jen minutes."

Bail was fixed at £300, or in two sureSss of £150 each.
