VOTES IN THE PAST

The electoral roll for the Manukau b^-election which takes place on Wednesday, September 30, has closed with a total of 15,559 names, compared with 14,821 at the General Election in November last, an increase of 738 names.

For a number of years the Manukau constituency was represented by the late Sir Maurice O'Rorke; and at a by-election in December, 1906, Sir Frederic Lang was elected and held the seat continuously until 1922, when he was defeated by the Labour candidate, Mr. Jordan, by whom the seat was retained until Mr. Jordan was appointed High Commissioner. As this is the first by-election since the success of the Labour Party at the polls in 19S)i, the subjoined summary of results «f the several General Elections from 1922 will doubtless be of interest to many electors. 1922. On roll 10,715. Jordan 4620 Lang 4411 Adnams 301 Total 9332 1925. On Roll 13,925. Jordan 6748 John Massey 5964 Total 12,712 1928. Jordan 9345 Wily (Nationalist) .... 2943 Thornley (Democrat) .. 1020 Total 13,308 Of the two candidates, Messrs. Doidge (Nationalist) and Osborne (Labour), at the forthcoming by-election, it will be remembered that as an Independent candidate the former contested Rotorua seat at last General Election, polling 3442 votes, the Labour candidate (elected) securing 4894, the Nationalist ! candidate 2784, and the Democrat candidate 223 votes. At the same election Mr. Osborne contested Paniell seat, polling 5028 votes, the Nationalist candidate (elected) 5758, Independent 3334, and the Liberal candidate 507 votes. At 1 the General Elections of 1925, 1928, 1931, Mr. Osborne contested Waitemata seat, polling respectively 3524, 2485, <"Thd 3215 votes against the successful candidate, Mr. Harris, who ! polled 7101, 4683, and 5593. votes.
