TABLE TENNIS

N. 2... CHAMPIONSHIPS

THREE TITLES TO AUCKLAND

Several spectacular battles between Auckland and Wellington representatives, played before a packed house, marked the final rounds of the New Zealand table tennis championships in the Sydney Street Hall last night. The final of the men's singles, between Cantlay (Auckland) and Bell (Wellington) and semi-final between Bell and Burke, Auckland champion in 1934 and 1935, and now of Wellington, aroused considerable excitement among the spectators. Bell had previously defeated Munns, the Auckland champion, in three straight sets. • The features of the semifinal between Burke and Bell were Burkes terrific smashing and driving and Bell s amazing cut returns, sometimes from 15ft behind the table, causing the ball to break sharply to left and right at will. The players were very evenly matched, each taking alternate-sets, but Bell won in the final set on the accuracy of his recoveries and on his exceedingly varied spins. Both players received a great ovation. Cantlay decisively defeated the defending New Zealand champion, Paton, ■ in three straight sets in the other semifinal and met Bell in a battle of tactics in the final. Both players varied the method of their attack, interspersing spin drives with half-volleys and drop shots. Cantlay was quick on his fee throughout but towards the end Bell was showing signs of strain. Cantlay found effective counters for every one of Bell's strokes, winning finally on the superiority of his forehand drive. After defeating Burke and Dennis (Wellington) in a five-set match in the semi-final, Boys and Cantlay, of Auckland met two other Auckland players, Stowell and Cheal, in a five-set final. Although they lost the first two sets, Boys and Cantlay won the final three with well-executed drives and good combination. , ■' '. .
