MOERA FREE KINDERGARTEN

A dance in aid of the Moera Free Kindergarten was held in the Community Hall at Moera. The committee comprised Mesdames Paynter, Baldwin, Stevens, Campbell, Jamieson, and Messrs. Baldwin, Sutherland, Payes, and" Jamieson. Mr. T. Campbell officiated as M.C. The dancers included Mesdames Mills, Jones, Sutherland, Harris, W. Jones, Potter; Misses Middleton, M. Bramley, M. Jones, T. Keene, T. Stevens, J. Baldwin, A. Fairclagh, B. Fairclagh, J. Mills, N. Walsh, A. Campbell, T. Burns, L. Steffent, A. Watson, N. McArdle, N. Griffin, M. Jones, E. Jones; and Messrs. Bramley, Dawson, V. Smith, J. Smith, J. Martin, A. Bramley, R. Coffee, M. Clark, A. Hall, Fleet, G. Jones, J. Morris, McArdle, Mullins, and Cook. Drama Festival. The third session of the Drama Festival, held annually by the Southern Wellington Federation of Women's Institutes, was commenced in St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, last night, and will be finalised this evening, when the awards will be announced. The keen interest taken in this section of the institute's activities is evidenced by the large audiences attending, both in Paekakariki last week, when the first two sessions were held, and in Lower Hutt last night. Mrs. Hume extended, a welcome lo the teams taking part in the festival: Wainui-o-mata, Taita, Upper1 Hutt, Newlands, Otaki, and Manakau. The adjudicator (Miss Doris Syme) gave a clear and concise summing-up at the end of each play, pointing out faults in the production or in individual players, and suggesting improvements. : The first play (Wainui-ojnata), produced by Mrs. Still, was entitled "The Mere Man," and enacted an amusing story of a spinsters' club. Those taking part were Mesdames MacGowan, Heathcote, Still, and Misses N. Jones, E. Drummond, J. Callis, and Knowler. It was followed by the Taita No. 1 team in "Get Out of Your Cage," produced by Miss Wilson, a sketch of school life. The cast comprised. Mesdames Pudney, Bonthorne, Hunter, Bertelsen, Dyer, and Miss Wilson. Mrs.. Dalton, of Upper Hutt No. 1 team, was the producer of "Little Glass Houses," a comedy that showed pretty period frocks and the prudery of a past generation. Taking part were Mesdames Driscole, Routley, Hyslop, Morton, and Stroudi Upper Hutt's No. 4 team, with the same producer, staged "Sing a Song of Sixpence," with the cast Mesdames Harrison,- Pelling, Spencer, Braid, Judge, and Hazelwood. "Anti-Clockwise," a sketch of deeper dramatic note, was enacted by the Newlands team, comprising Mesdames Knight, Ring, Joiner, and Tunley, and was produced by Mrs. Ring. All five plays were-thoroughly appreciated by the audience, and- will be followed by others;tonight, when the Otaki and Manakau teams will participate. Coming; Military Ball. At the military ball to be held next week in Lower ; Hutt, the following ladies have consented to be hostesses: Lady Alexander Roberts, Mrs. J. W. Andrews, Mrs. W. Mrs. E. M. Stdce, Mrs. R. O. Cheshey, Mrs. C. G. Hedge, and Mrs^. F.: Syirion. An energetic sub-committee of ladies; with Mrs; R. G, Cowie as convener, has already raised,a considerable sum towards'defraying the expenses. Mr. H. E.v Edwards is the organiser of a committee which is to prepare and. decorate the Horticultural Hall for the occasion., '■:,[ At a recent well-attended meeting in connection with: the ball, the chairman of committees, Mr. C. G. Hedge, reported that .a' ( very encouraging response was being made by the various units in the Hutt Valley and by the public in general.
