CONVENTION OPENED

WELLINGTON W.C.T.U.

In the Y.W.C.A. lecture room the annual convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Wellington district, opened yesterday afternoon. The entertaining branch was the Wellington Central Union, and the chair was occupied by Mrs. J. C. Webb (district president). Other officials present were the Misses Lopdell, Sawden, Tanner, and Wood. Mrs. Peryman (editress of the "White Ribbon") and Miss C. E. Kirk, J.P. (Dominion recording secretary), and Mrs. Chisholm and-Mrs. Spencer (superintendents of the departments of the Dominion Temperance work).

Mrs. Webb welcomed the visiting delegates. Mrs. Culleri was appointed mistress of courtesies.

Correspondence was read dealing with temperance teaching in schools, social and moral hygiene, and liquor licences for tourist resorts.

It. was decided to send letters of greeting to the Dominion president and the treasurer of the Petone branch, who is 80 years of age.

Mrs. Lopdell gave an address, in which she pointed out the changes that have taken place during recent years in home life and the many avenues of work now open to women. As examples of the fine work done by women she described that of Dr. Edith Blackwell, Dr.1 J. Blake, and Jbsephine Butler. .

DELEGATES ENTERTAINED,

The delegates to the convention were entertained in the.evening at a pleasant social which took place at the union rooms in Constable Street. They were welcomed by Mrs. T. A. Barrow (central president).

Competitions and musical items were an enjoyable part of the programme. The Karori and Petone Unions conducted the competitions. Recitations were given by Mrs. Stinson (Brooklyn Union) and Mrs. Castle (Central). Mrs. Childs (Central) and Mrs. Janson gave a duet. TVliss Hendrickson (Island Bay) gave a piano solo, and members of the Wellington Union a dialogue. Supper was served.
