FARM LABOUR PROBLEM
A MATTER OF WAGES
The statement that he knew of no application for farm labour from a farmer offering wages and conditions comparable to the standard laid down in the Agricultural Workers Act which the Labour Department had been unable to satisfy, was made by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) in reply to an urgent question asked by Mr. J. A. Roy (National, Clutha). Mr. Roy asked the Minister what steps he proposed to take with regard to the acute shortage of farm labour in the South Otago district. ' "Allegations of acute shortage of farm labour have been made on previous occasions lately in the House," said the Minister. "I have on those occasions emphasised that my Department lias facilities for assisting farmers to obtain labour. All they require to do is to apply to .the nearest certifying officer, when every effort will be made to satisfy those requests, providing the wages and conditions are comparable to the standard laid down by the Agricultural Workers Act. I know of no application from a farmer offering those terms which my Department has been unable to satisfy."
