TABLE TENNIS

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

MANY CLOSE MATCHES

The New Zealand table tennis championships were commenced in the Sydney Street Hall yesterday and will be concluded this evening. One of the most interesting matches of the evening was between H. Pylc (Wellington) and E. Hughes (Hutt Valley), the former player winning in a five-set match. Pyle, who took the first two sets, appeared to have the game well in hand, but Hughes, playing a steady game, was definitely superior in the third, and fourth. Tha fifth and final set saw Hughes fighting hard, but Pyle, playing with his former dash, again mastered the position and won the deciding set 21-19. The game between Longmore and Osbaldiston also went to five sets before Osbaldiston won. Playing with remarkable accuracy, and making full use of well-angled drives, Kennedy (Wellington) defeated Boys (Auckland) in three straight sets. Miss Hughes (Manawatu) used her exceptionally strong forehand drive against Mrs. Valk (Hutt Valley), frequently finishing fast rallies with a backhand flick. Miss Sturrock, by half-volleying everything possible and keeping the ball low, gave Miss Strang, the Wellington champion, little opportunity of using her excellent drive. Miss Wil-1 kinson relied upon her defence against Miss Sturrock, but when opportunity to attack occurred she made good use of it. Miss Dove (Auckland), ladies' singles champion, was too strong on attack for Mrs. Ingham (Hutt Valley). C. Burkes driving against Harding was both fast and accurate. D. Hayyice was fully extended in his match against S. Blackie. Hay vice gave his customary hard-hitting display.
