FINED FOR DESERTION
Charged in the Magistrate's Court with desertion from the steamer Cambridge, Donald Gillies, an able seaman, aged 31, pleaded guilty before Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., and was fined £2 and costs. "Desertions have been numerous lately and it is difficult to get substitute able seamen in Wellington," said Mr. Gardiner, shipping agent, when asked by the Magistrate about the case. Desertions cost the company a lot of money, he added. Gillies replied that he had left £18 on board. '*
