CLUB MATCH
WELLINGTON V. CARTERTON
A hard ground and ideal weather conditions made for a very fast game between the Carterton Club and the Wellington Club at Hataitai on Saturday afternoon. A feature of the game was the fine play of the Wellington backs, who several times broke through the Carterton defences. Kane and Paterson were both prominent, the first potting a goal and making several good openings and Paterson scoring two good tries. The Carterton forwards were frequently dangerous in loose play, but their backs, although often showing as individualists, lacked combination. The pace tired both packs some time before the end of the game. The teams were:— Wellington.—Morgan; Ullrich, Kane, Paterson; Davidson, Veitch; Hislop; Dimes, Bracken, Cragg, Cathie, Read. McLean, Coupland, Stevens. Carterton. — Jansen; D. Smith, Brooks, Booth; J. Steffert, Brunton; Cook; Hood, McCann, G. Steffert, H. Matherson, A. Matherson, Howie, P. Smith, D. Taylor. Wellington attacked hard from the kick off. and for fifteen minutes kept play in the Carterton half, staging attack after attack upon the Carterton .line. The backs were handling very soundly, but the collaring was always reliable. Kane, instead of trying to break through then, attempted a pot from a 30-yard scrum and opened the score with a fine goal. Hislop, the Wellington half, also changed his tactics but cutting around instead of passing out from the scrum, and made a good opening for Veitch to sprint through and score. He converted his own try. Soon afterwards the ball went the full length of the backs and Paterson got over in the corner. The pace was beginning to tell on Wellington, and Carterton's turn at attack came Twice the ball was lost right on the Wellington line, and then from a scrum infringement J. Steffert kicked a penalty. The Carterton forwards again rushed play down to the Wellington line, and P. Smith forced his way over and scored. An easy kick was unsuccessful and the spell ended: Wellington 15, Carterton 6. The second half opened with a dangerous movement by Carterton, who for five minutes had Wellington defending desperately until Taylor got through and scored. The kick failed. Carterton again attacked but Kane saved, sending Paterson down the line to the Carterton end, but he was forced out by Jansen. Kane again broke through from a midfield ruck and Hislop went over in the corner. McLean's kick fell short. The Wellington backs, almost on time, staged an excellent passing rush, and Stevens went over to score an unconverted try, the game ending: Wellington Club 21, Carterton Club 9.
