REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY
AUSTRALIANS LOSE TO CANTERBURY
WELLINGTON'S SHIELD CHALLENGE FAILS
From the point of view of success Wellington had a disappointing day in Rugby football on Saturday. Two Wellington representative teams were in the field, one at Dunedin in a match with the Ranfurly Shield holders and the other at Athletic Park against Wanganui's representatives. The early promise of good things from the Wellington team in the match with Otago was not fulfilled, and Wellington were soundly defeated. A high-scoring match locally resulted in favour of the Wanganui team, which put up a good performance. The Australians, continuing their New Zealand tour, had an engagement with Canterbury, and again were defeated, though on this occasion they failed by only one point in a spirited bid for success. Auckland had two teams in the field and, like Wellington, had to admit defeat in both matches.
