SEVERE BACK IN FORM

In winning the Robinson Handicap, Severe simply added to the numerous list of good two-year-old fillies who have failed completely as three-year-olds but have returned to form as four-year-olds. Last season Severe was never once in the money in seven starts, and at one time it was announced that she was to be retired to the stud, but she is having a further chance to make good this term and she started off satisfactorily towards this end on Saturday. Severe was in front before the field had gone a furlong. Before the straight she had disposed of Miss Hushabye, and then she was quite capable of warding off a challenge from Jubilee Song by over a length. It was a pleasing performance by this daughter of Limond, who is a full-sister to Mandamus and closely related to Spiral, and it augurs, a successful season with her for the Awapuni trainer J. P. Coyle, who holds her on lease from Mr. G. M. Currie. Jubilee Song, winner of the corresponding race at the Winter Meeting, came through along the inner in the straight, but could make little impression on Severe. Full Throttle, who lost position when Severe and Miss Hushabye joined him in the lead early, made up ground to gain third place. Hazoor was running oh from the rear fourth. Gay Boy, the favourite, was unlucky in more ways than one, for after being ■ started from outside "; a hurdle and being wide out all the way he ran into Miss Hushabye as she dropped back nearing the straight.
