BRITISH RECRUITING EFFORT 17,000 WANTED; 286 JOIN UP LONDON, September. 17. "The Times" says that recruiting for the new infantry reserve is worse than disappointing., Although it was intended to enlist 17,000 men, so far only 286 have joined up. In the' House of Commons on July 28 the Secretary of War, Mr..A; DuffCooper, in reply to a question,, announced a decision to create a new infantry section, of the Supplementary Reserve with an initial establishment of 17,000 men. Enlistment, which would be for general service in the infantry for six years, with the option of reengagement for a further period' of four years, would be open to unmarried men from 17 to 25 years of ag£. Men enlisting would be required to do 26 weeks' training in the first year and ,14 days' training annually; thereafter. They would receive a free issue of clothing on "enlistment and during the training period full pay as for regular infantry of the, line, with an annual bounty of £6 conditional on their carrying out the required annual training. Recruiting opened on September 1.

(Received September 19, 12.50 p.m.) r RUGBY, September 18. i Enrolment; into the ! national defence companies of the Territorial Army, which are being formed for the purpose of protecting important points in Great Britain on threat of and during war, opened on September 1 last, and the War Office announces that the number enrolled to September 12- totalled 2081. In addition, there were some 2500 applications for enrolment which are still under consideration; The total establishment of these national defence companies is approximately 8450. Officers and other ranks of the Royal Defence Corps will consist of ex-mem-bers of his Majesty's Forces between the ages of 45 and 60 years. They will not be called up for service until the guarding of important points becomes necessary,-neither will they be called up on account of civil disturbance.
