DEFEAT OF WHITCOMBE PROFESSIONAL GOLF FINAL (Received September 19, noon.) LONDON, September 18. In the final of the professional match-play golf tournament at Oxhey, Rees beat E. R.. Whitcombe, 1 up. Rees, who' is a Welsh assistant at the Surbiton Club, is only the second assistant. in twenty-three ; years to reach the semi-final in the professional match-play championship. Rees, is 23 years old and ,sft 6in in height. He is described as a little man without nerves. He produced one of the most amazing recoveries in the history of professional golf. He turned 5 down and was still faced with an overwhelming deficit w\th fourteen holes to ■go when he did ten holes in 34. He had birdies at six holes and only one, putt on seven greens. Whitcombe had par figures for the same holes.
