FRENCH CLUB REUNION

The fortnightly reunion of the French Club of Wellington was held on Thursday in the Pioneer Clubs rooms, Mr. W. F. C. Balham presiding. The programme was in the hands of Professor F. F. Miles, 0.A., and opened with "L'Absolution," a piece by Jose Germain and Emmanuel Bourcier. The play deals with a painful domestic situation in which a woman who has been convicted of theft, owing to an unaccountable attack of kleptomania, is being received again into her n ° me after an absence of several montns. Special praise was accorded Alan Miles (the son), who made his first appearance upon this occasion. Miss Coralie Smythson as the wife had some touching scenes, and probably most of the audience felt that this woman was more sinned against than sinning when considering the punishment meted out to her. Professor Miles filled the role of the embittered and shamed husband with conviction, and Professor F. Wood was the family friend, Avho earnestly tries to make the husband abandon his fantastic plan for punishment. Miss I. Smythson was the new servant. Other items were a Dutch dance by little Ngaire Hare (a pupil of Nancy Rabe), with bright "Gretchen" costume and fair plaits. "Les Rouge et les Noir," by Leon Frapie, a short story by Miss U. Tewsley, and a causerie by the Rev. Dr. Francis Walsh, entitled "Huysmans et la Cathedrale." Community singing and supper brought the evening to a close.
