NEW ZEALAND CUP

FIVE AUCKLAND ENTRANTS (Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, This Day. There are five Auckland horses entered for the NeV Zealand Cup, and four of them may be raced at Avondale this weekend. Master Brierly and Velocipede were engaged in this afternoon's Avondale Cup, and Royal.. Appellant and King Rey may race on Monday. Dark Shadow is the other New Zealand Cup representative from this quarter, but he has no immediate engagements, which does not suggest the big Riccartori race as his mission. He was raced throughout the early winter months, his last outing being on June 6. Royal Appellant has been working well at Ellerslie, and while he is well up in the weights he is always a prospect in good handicap company, for he has the pace, ability to carry weight, and can stay a solid ten furlongs, which, is to be the distance also on Monday for the handicap division. The Appellant gelding has not faced since he.won on the final day of the "Great Northern Meeting, so that he may want a race, his mission

[doubtless: being the Mitchelsbn Cup three weeks hence. These outings ! should give a line on his New Zealand I Cup prospects. ■',■ • I King Rey was withdrawn from the Avondale Cup in favour of his stablemate Tradesman, but he. is in good "order and will prdbably be given a run on Monday. His schedule twelve months ago included the New Zealand Cup, and it was hot decided until late in the discussions to keep him at home. The field for the Plumpton Handicapon.Monday does not differ materially from that down to contest the Avondale Cup this afternoon, with the addition of Royal Appellant and King Rey and the; Wanganui winner Delrain. In today's field there are several horses who will benefit considerable from a race, so that today's form may be hard to overcome on Monday, the, most likely improver being Mazir. RUSSIA AND~GERMANY The stallion Poor Man 'was secured in Ireland by agents of the Soviet Government, and £ 1500 was paid for him. The value of the chargers and other horses bought by agents of the German Government in Ireland, during the present year is £47,000. They propose to obtain a further £IOO,OOO worth of such horses in Ireland during the remaining months of the year. AUCKLAND CLASSICS (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, September 18.
