PRIVATE ESTATE BILL
COUNCIL'S FIRM STAND
The Nelson Diocesan Trust Board Empowering Bill met with a swift fate in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. ,
The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, who was in charge of the Bill, moved that the Standing Orders be suspended so as to allow the Bill to. proceed. The Speaker (the Hon. Sir Walter Carncro'ss') drew attention to the fact that the Bill was a private estate Bill, and pointed out. that a certificate was required from a Judge of the Supreme Court in terms of the Legislature Act, 1908./ : ;.:.".:••■
Sir Walter said that Mr. Mclntyre's motion was tantamount to asking the Council to.. convert all its Standing Orders affecting private estate Bills into scraps of paper, and would result in the. flouting' of the Supreme Court. "I recognise that I am the servant of the Council, and that any order they make must be given effect to, but I consider that. I. should have absolutely failed in my duty if'.l had not drawn pointed.attention, to the position as I view, it," he said. ■ Sir James Allen seconded - Mr. McIntyre's motion, which, however, was lost on the voices. ,
