EASTBOURNE FARES

! INCREASE FOR BUSES Milage' - ... An. .application, by ..the. E.ast'oqurne. Borough Council for increased fares for its Wellington-Eastbourne bus services was heard yesterday by No. 2 Licensing Authority,"Mr. P, Skoglund. Mr. C. L. ■; Bishop (Eastbourne Borough Council) maintained that the increased fares were reasonable, considering the milage run, the density of the population, arid the frequency of the service. Most of the revenue c'ame from Eastbourne and Day's Bay.-, Running costs decreased as th.e milage increased, and therefore longer-distance passengers were entitled to any concessions in fares.

Mr. Bishop made-a general application for a small' increase in fares, mainly because of recent increases in costs. ■'■''■'>'.'

Mr. J. B. Yaldwyn, on behalf of the Lowry Bay residents, made a general objection to the present system of estimating these fares. It seemed an illogical system, he said. Fares should be estimated on "a milage'basis.

He was supported by Mr. G. B. .Wilson., from York Bay. The' Borough Council's application was' granted ' without alteration. Mr. Skoglund was of the opinion that the council's methods of assessing fares were reasonable. He found that the fares compared favourably with those in any other r part' of New Zealand. Revenue must be'taken into consideration. As regarded intermediate places, a bus might leave Eastbourne filled to capacity, and in order to carry out its duties to intermediate places, the council might have to put on another bus to carry half a dozen people to Wellington. The schedule was quite a .fair one. The increases were fair also, 'as he had knowledge that there would be extra overhead charges for all motor services.

Wellington-Hutt Park - and ■ Eastbourn e-Tawa -Flat renewals were also granted. * '••''•
