WOMAN ALPINIST
VISIT OF.,MISS GARDINER On her sixth visit to New Zealand Miss Kate Gardiner,' a well-known ■ English alpinist," will arrive here early' in the coming summer (states the "Press"). Miss Gardiner was last in the Dominion in 1933, her first visit having been in 1927. ■ When she was last in Christchurch she stated that she found the climbing here more diffi- " cult than in other mountain regions known to her, such as the Canadian Rockies and parts of Europe, but that the New Zealand mountains held a particular attraction' for' her. V ; For her coming visit, when she will climb in the - Southern Alps, both id the Mount Cook region arid in Central Otago, Miss Gardiner has engaged Mr. Vic Williams, chief guide at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and • Guide Frank Alack, of the Franz Josef Glacier. Guide Alack, Who had decided to tetire from mountaineering, has made himself available especially for Miss Gardiner's climbs. It is understood that she plans an extensive programme, . but this will not be decided upon till her arrival. Between two visits .to the South Island in 1933, Miss Gardiner spent tha summer in Canada, 1 climbing in the Rockies and the mountainous region round Lake Louise.. There she made several first ascents, one of Mount Foster and one of Mount Hanbury, as well as climbing two unnamed peaks each about 10,500 ft high.
