75 YEARS OLD
BRITISH P. 0.5.8. GREAT GROWTH OF BUSINESS (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 16. The Post Office Savings Bank was opened 75 years ago today. From the beginning the,bank has made uninterrupted progress. When it was opened in 1861, 300posti offices were authorised lo conduct savings bank business. Within three months the number was 1700, and:today■■ it is 18,500. There are now some 10,000,000 depositors, and the total amount owned by them exceeds £414,000.000. The average deposit of £4l compares with £3l five years ago, an indication both of the more prosperous condition of the country and of the increased popularity of the Savings Bank.
