AWATEA'S SPEED
A FIVE HOURS' TRIAL <By Telegraph.—iPresa Association.! AUCKLAND, September 17. Held to satisfy several Union Steam Ship Company directors who were passengers from Wellington to Auckland that the claims made for her were justified, a.,five-hour speed trial up the coast of New Zealand by the new Tasman liner Awatea showed that the vessel will have no difficulty in making the Tasman crossing in even less time than the two and a half days which have been allowed. Her speed during the trial, with a reserve of power, showed that she could easily exceed the fastest time ever made between New Zealand and Australia. The automatic steering wheel was again used coming from Wellington. It was possible, said one of the passengers, to find only one officer on the bridge, and he occupied with charts.
