NEW TRAM FARES

WORKERS' TICKETS Application is to be made by the City Council for an Order in Council to authorise the following increase in the price of workers' tickets:—Twosection return: The existing 2s six return trip ticket to be replaced by a 2s five-return-trip ticket (rate per ride advanced from 2d to 2.4 d). Threesection return: The existing 2s 9d six-return-trip ticket to be replaced by a 2s 6d flve-return-trip ticket (rate per ride advanced from 2.75 d to 3d). Councillor T. Brindle asked whether it was not possible to change the issue of the ordinary one-section concession card. Many people would prefer to pay Is 6d for 12 rides rather than to have to purchase much more frequently the shilling card giving eight rides only. The return to the department would be the same, but passengers would find the Is 6d ticket more convenient.

Councillor R. A. Wright, M.P., said that the same point had been made over the universal ticket. Many passengers would prefer to buy a sufficient number of rides, at the same fare per ride, of course, to see them through the week. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that he thought that the new tickets might very well be given a fair trial before any change was made. Councillor P. M. Butler said that when the council had decided to abolish the relief workers' ticket, in view of the cessation of city relief works, the case of a number of men who were engaged on various N0. .5 jobs at charitable institutions and elsewhere had been overlooked. Was it possible that the issue of the tickets could be continued for these men? The Mayor agreed that those men had been overlooked. The management.had inquired into the matter and had been assured that there would be no difficulty in confining the issue ol such tickets to men who were properly entitled to them. He agreed that the former, arrangement should be continued.
