SOME DISCONTENT
FORTY HOURS ON RESERVES "Are you aware of the discontent existing among the employees of the reserves department, due to the fact that the council's intention of the observance of the 40-hour five-day week from Monday to Friday is not being carried out?" asked Councillor P. M. Butler, at last evening's meeting of the City Council. In explaining the question, Councillor Butler said that the men fully realised the necessity of work on beaches, playing grounds, baths, and glasshouses on Saturdays, and an order of the Court had been made on these grounds, but some of the men were being required to work on Saturday mornings at non-essential work, such as sweeping leaves, at the Botanical Gardens. The Mayor said that he was not conversant with' the details, but in the absence of Mr. J. Burns, chairman of the committee, the City Solicitor,- Mr. J, plShea, said that a difference had arisen between the department and the, union, but it was likely that this would be adjusted.
