TAXIS AND CARRIERS
INQUIRY PROGRAMME COMMENCEMENT ON MONDAY In connection with the inquiry to be held into the taxi-cab and towncarrying business, Mr. P. M. Butler, the chairman, stated today that, as had been advertised, the committee would open investigations in the Arbitration Court, Wellington, on Monday at 10 o'clock. . , ~ .„i He pointed out that under the Act the committee would have the powers of a commission of inquiry and therefore proposed to take all evidence on oath and. generally, to conduct proceedings as they would _be conducted in a commission of inquiry._ "We are most anxious," said Mr. Butler "that anybody in the locality who is interested or who has any ideas on these problems should give evidence before us, and with that end in view I have arranged that circulars be sent to all licensed town carriers and taxicab operators." ' Mr. Butler indicated that the committee would be sitting in Wellington for a week, but if it was found necessary they would take further evidence at a later date. "We propose to deal with the taxicab problem first and will be hearing evidence in th'S.connection on Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday. . It is then proposed to commence the inquiry into the town-carrying business on Thursday." " . . . ' ' After leaving Wellington the committee- will be sitting in Christchurch. Dunedin, Invercargill, Timaru, Palmerston North, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Hamilton, Auckland, Whangarei, Botorua, Gisborne, Napier-Hast-ings, and Masterton. Mr. A. L. Lynskey is the secretary of the committee - and all inquiries should be directed to • him, at the i Transport Department, Wellington.
