GRADING OF SCHOOLS
BASIS -FOR NEXT YEAR
BOARD'S SATISFACTION
Satisfaction was expressed by the Wellington Education Board yesterday afternoon with the information contained in a letter from the Director of Education (Mr. N. T. Lamboume) on the question of the grading of schools for 1937.
"The question has been raised by some boards," stated Mr. Lamboume in his letter, "as to the basis on which schools will be graded on February 1, 1937, and I have now to advise you that for 1937 schools are to be graded on 95 per cent, of the average roll number for the period beginning on September 7 and ending on October 2, 1938. The average is to be computed by dividing the sum of the roll numbers for every day on which the school is open by the number of such days. If a school is open for only half of any day such half-day is to be counted as a whole day for the purpose of this average." Mr. Lamboume added that a regulation to cover this departure from the standing regulation would be prepared shortly. The period taken would allow of the information being obtained in time to make the necessary arrangements for any changes of staff from the beginning of the year. The chairman (Mr. W. V. Dyer) said that the decision represented a great step forward. It was something which had been sought for many years. He moved that the board congratulate the Minister on what he had done in this respect.
Mr. W. H. Jackson seconded the motion, which was carried.
"We have been fighting for this for years," said Mr. Jackson.
