SOME RECENT MEETINGS

! District Lodge.—Bro. R. J. Mathers. D.D.G.M., presided over a good attendance. Accounts totalling £84 8s 7d were passed for payment. The second degree was conferred on three members. The report of the ball commit tee indicated that the recent function was one of the most successful yet I held. The D.D.G.M. reported on vari- ; cut official visits. The proposed afireeiment between the hospital committee land Hospital Board was finally ratified. Judges for the ritual competitions were appointed as follows:—Subordinate senior, Bros. H. A. Hardham and F. J. Jones; junior, Bros. E. D. Wallis and' H. J. Rowney; Rebekah Senior, Bros. F. J. Jones and P. J. Lee; junior, Bros. P. J. Lee and W. H. Munro. Several remits for the session of Grand Lodge were approved. Bro. W. H. Munro was appointed returning officer for the election of representatives. The D.D.G.M. presented Bro. F. J. Phillips with a past degree master's jewel in recognition of services rendered in the district and degree lodge. Southern Cross Lodge.—Bro. J. P. Salmond, N.G., presided over a large attendance. The sick visitors reported favourably on sick members. Accounts totalling £67 12s lOd were passed for payment. Invitations to various social functions were accepted. It was decided to accept the date arranged by Ngatitoa Lodge for the cribbage tournament. Arrangements were made for Fn^tL cSil L'W' tournament. Reports were _ received from the dispensary delegate, Bro. Salmond, and the social committee. One candidate was admitted to membership by initiation and i one by transfer. A further candidate \ was nominated for admission. i Zealandia Lodge.—Bro. R. W. Harvey, N.G., presided over a fair attendance. Three members were reported to be still on the sick list and relative sick pay was passed for payment. A vote of condolence with Bro. Rowntree iri the loss of his son was passed, members standing in silence. Two propositions were received for membership. It was decided to officially visit Wildey Lodge next meeting. A vote of welcome to visiting brethren was responded to by Bro. E. Binstead (Southern Cross Lodge). After the conclusion of lodge business a successful dance was held in the form of a "viceversa" evening, there being a large attendance. Prizes for the best 'ladies were awarded to Bros. E. D. Wallis and H. Woolcott, and for the best "gents" to Mrs. Wallis and Sister SerWildey Lodge.—Bro. J. Inness, N.G., presided over a good muster, the only visitor being the Grand Chaplain, Bro. F. Jones. Three members were declared on the sick fund and relative sick pay, together with general accounts, was passed for payment. Inr vitations to socials were receiyed from kindred lodges, members signifying their intentions to attend same. Reports from committees were adopted, the Christmas party committee intimating that it is going into ways and means, to report at a later date. Three nominations for membership were received. The first nomination of officers took place. Routine matters having been concluded, the, lodge was closed to allow a dance to "be staged for the children's. Christmas party funds, but owing to the inclement weather it was not the success that was expected.

Victoria Rebekah Lodge.—Sister G. Gubbins, K.G., presided over a good attendance.- Official visits were received from Esther and Ngaio Rebekah Lodges. Reports on sick members were received. Invitations to social functions were received from Rahiri, Ngaio, Onslow, and Wildey Lodges; Five lady candidates were proposed for membership. A vote of welcome to tha visitors was responded to by Sister Godfrey (Ngaio Rebekah Lodge), Sister E. Deardon (Esther Rebekah Lodge), arid\Sister M. Sergent, L.D;D.G.M. Official visits were arranged to Rahiri and Ngaio Rebekah Lodges MANCHESTER UNITY ODDFELLOWS. Loyal Antipodean Lodge.—Bro. Hicks presided over the last meeting at which there was a fair attendance.' Visitors from Petone and Vincent Lodges were accorded lodge honours. Bro. A.'C. Blair was congratulated on having attained his jubilee of membership whilst in the position of Grand Master of the Order in New Zealand. A maternity allowance and death benefit were passed for payment. Members on sick list were reported as progressing favourably. Sick pay was passed for payment. Games of indoor bowls were later played, Petone Lodge mem; bers being the' winners in the final match against Antipodean Lodge. Loyal Sister Wallis Lodge.—Sister M. Tregurtha conducted the last meeting at which there was a good attendance. One new member was initiated, Sisters Reynard and Forbes being the conductors. Arrangements were made to hold a social at the conclusion of the next meeting. Correspondence included an invitation from the Grand Master of the Order in New Zealand, Bro. A. C. Blair, to be his guests at a social gathering at an early date, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his member-, ship in the Order. Notification was received from Newtown Lodge of its annual dance. An invitation was also received from Britannia Lodge to attend a social at the close of the next meeting. Sister Reynard reported on a recent meeting of the Medical Institute. It was resolved to invite members of the Hutt Valley Lodges and Antipodean Lodge to the first meeting in October, cards and dancing being arranged for a social hour at the conclusion of the meeting. ■. Sister E. Tobin, on behalf of Sister E. Bell, reported on visits to sick • members. Sister Reynard nominated two candidates for membership on. behalf of Bro. Webb of Newtown Lodge. Loyal Rose of the Valley Lodge.— The regular fortnightly meeting was held recently. Letters of sympathy were forwarded to the relatives of two deceased members. As a mark of respect members stood in silence. Bro. A. Hewer was appointed Acting Noble Grand until Bro. Holmes was able to resume office. Sick reports were received regarding several members, and sick pay was passed for payment. Invitations were received from the Grand Master and Britannia Lodge to attend social gatherings. The Lecture Master conferred degrees on three members. Ping-pong and indoor bowls afforded a pleasant social hour. Loyal Newtown Lodge.—Bro. J. Young presided over a large attendance. A challenge from Kilbirme Lodge was accepted for the Telford Cup. Bro. Dumbleton reported on the sick and sick pay was passed. The odge' adjourned to entertain visitors at a progressive "500" tournament. At a later date Bro. Young, Noble Grand, conducted a well-attended meeting. Invitations were received from the Grand Master and from Britannia Lodge to social evenings. Bro. S. Eades presented the lodge with a model launch, the proceeds of disposal to be credited to the Christmas tree fund. A new member was initiated, Bro. Johns acting as conductor and Bro. Eades as lecture master. Bro. Dumbleton proposed four new candidates for initiation at next meeting. GKAND UNITED ODDFELLOWS. Loyal Ryde Branch. —The branch held another of its sports evenings last meeting night, the executive transacting urgent business. A feature of the evening was a surprise visit by members of Fetone Pioneer branch with their set of indoor bowls. . Table tennis was also played. A vote of thanks was accorded Petone Pioneer branch members for their visit and an invitation to visit them was accepted. Loyal Central Branch.—Sis. Hooper, N G was the presiding officer, Bro. B. Hutchinson, P.N.G., supervising. Three new members were initiated and two candidates proposed for membership. Sister Harnor, Senior, and Bro. Dunne, of William Bain branch, were welcomed. Bro. Kennedy reported on the success of the recent table tennis tournament. Bro. Couper reported on arrangements for a benefit dance and Sis. Hooper reported on a recent meeting of the Medical Institute and the ritual competition. Sick and general accounts were passed for payment. After the meeting badminton and cards were played. Star of Lower Hutt Branch.—The last meeting of the branch was abandoned and an open nigfyt was held when the theatrical party gave its

third' concert. There was a very large attendance. The following items were presented:—Sketch. "Seeing Red"; song.-Bro. Bolton; Greek play, "Perry, Us. arid the Dromedary"; song. Sister Hey; sketch, "Ah, Flowers"; saxophone solo, Bro. Bolton; song. Bro. Land;' and a burlesque by the entire company entitled "The Gladiators." The audience showed its appreciation by many recalls. The concert was followed by dancing, the lodge orchestra supplying excellent music. Loyal Onslow Branch.—Bro. Edwards, N.G.. presided, with Bro. Lindsay. P.N.G., supervising, There was a large attendance.' One candidate was initiated. Bro. Couper, of Central branch, was a visitor. At the conclusion of the meeting a closely-contested table tennis tournament was played, Bro. Lindsay winning by a narrow margin. ' GOOD TEMPLARS. District Lodge.—Sister .Mrs. Devereaux, D.C. Templar, presided. Reports presented indicated that the position generally was well maintained. The following resolutions were passed and copies sent to the Hon. R. Semple. Minister of Transport:—"Motor drivers and alcoholic liquors—(l) That with a view to minimising motor accidents, motorists' attention be drawn to the grave danger of the use of alcoholic liquor whilst in charge of a motor, vehicle and that this ■■ instruction be embodied in the motorists' instruction. guide. (2) That: the' Government con-1 sider amending the law toprovide for' the penalty of .',■ imprisonment without I the option of, a fine, for persons found under the influence of liquor .while in charge of a motor vehicle:" ' ' Pride of Houghton Valley Lodge.— Bro. C. Huxford, C.T.. presided. A communication from the Hon. R. Semple. Minister,of Transport, in reply to resolutions sent to him in reference to intoxicated, drivers of; motor; vehicles, was w;arm'ly received. The report of the district lodge session recently held was: submitted by the C,T. The juvenile report was given by Sister Mrs. Fabian, D.S.J.W. Heartiest good wishes and greetings were received from Bro. W. A. lies (Dunedin), Bro. J. T. Chadderton ; (Auckland), Pioneer, Star of Wellington, Rescue, Pride of Roskill. Enterprise, and Endeavour Lodges." At' the. close of business all present attended-a banquet. A lengthy toast list, commencing with "The King," was submitted. Representatives were present from city lodges, Wellington District Lodge, and the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Bro. Petherick and Sister' Mrs. Devereaux represented the ' Grand arid District Lodges respectively, and referred 'to the good work being done in Houghton Valley, especially amongst the youth of the district. The function was brought to a successful ending by the interchange of fraternal good fellowship, and the singing of the National Anthem.
