UNITY THROUGH ART

EXHIBITION OF HANDICRAFTS

The National Union of Girls' Clubs in Britain this year prepared an interesting and unusual exhibition of handicrafts. "Peasant work," they said, in a preliminary announcement, "from all over Europe will ,be shown, and the political lion will lie down peacefully beside the handicraft lamb."

The idea of the arts proving a factor for peace and union among the nations is no new thing, and if the gathering together of children's drawings from the U.S.S.R., net embroideries from Czechoslovakia, Italian art works, Swedish toys, and English smocking can do anything to increase the understanding and friendship between different peoples—and we see no reason why not—then.we may wish such exhibitions good luck at this time with more than usual fervour.

Last year the English Folk Dance and Song Society > did similar propaganda work with an International Folk Dance Festival; this year that has not been possible, but the exhibition took its place.
