MINISTER CONGRATULATED

For a long time past tlie amounts'of the grant for the maintenance of school buildings and of the allowances to school committees t for cleaning purposes, etc., has given cause- for dissatisfaction in primary education circles in Wellington, but at the meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday afternoon the chairman (Mr. W. V. Dyer) and others spoke in terms of praise of. the advice .received from the Education Department of increases in the grants under both headings. It was decided to congratulate the Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) on the action that has been taken. ■ The annual grant the board has been receiving for the maintenance of school buildings has been £7416. but the board has now been advised that it is to receive £11,872 for the nsriod from April 1, 1936, to March 31. 1937. In other words, whereas the bo?i-d h~> been receiving £596 per fnon'Ji, it .i [to receive £989 per month. CAPITATION GRANT. The board has been receiving £901 7s Id per month for the incidental expenses of school committees, and it is now to receive £ 1476 17s Id per month, an increase of £515 per month, which is equal to an increase of 3s per head per, child. The total payment to ths board for the year from April 1, 1936, to. March 31. 1937, is to be £17,716 ss, compared with £11,536 ss, an additional grant of £6180.

The Minister is to be congratulated on having brought about other improvements, which the chairman stated the board had been fighting for for years—namely, the free- transport of Ngahauranga children attending tha Kaiwarra School and an alteration in the grading system of schools.
