MASTERTON PROGRAMME

A small increase in stake-money is being offered, by. the Masterton Racing Club for the Spring Meeting on Friday and Saturday/October 16 and 17, the week before the Wellington Meeting, and the programme has been adjusted to provide a well-balanced card on each- day. A feature of the programme is the longer average distance of the hack events, "with a mile hack race to conclude each day, instead of a six-furlong and a five-furlqng race respectively; but is a little risky concluding the second day's card with hack events over 1} miles (Champion Hack Handicap) and over one mile respectively. • - '■• • Last year the distance of the principal handicap each day was .1} miles, but this year the Masterton Handicap on-the-:first day will'be a mile race, and the C. F. Vallance Memorial Handicap' oh the. second day will be a mile and a quarter race. As a consequence the Vallance Memorial, carrying a stake of £150, will be the more valuable the stake attached to the Masterton Handicap being £120. These two races carry £70 more between them in specie than last year, but-a cup valued at £100 was donated for competition on the opening day twelve months ago. The other open event each day will be run over seven furlongs, and both stakes are £75, the same as last year.. Highweisht.handicaps replace last year's hurdles, which were not a success. . *
