LORD VAL FOR CUP

PENZANCE REVEALS PACE

(Special from "Early Bird.")

A.UCKLAND, September 16.

. It was stated previously that Lord Vai would 'contest the. Kingsland, Hurdles at Avondale on Saturday unless rain fell, in which event he would i take on the Avpridale- Cup. The latest information, forthcoming after a fine. gallop yesterday morning, indicates that the Cup will probably be his mission. H. Wiggins, who usually rides him, has been booked for' Mazir. Mazir showed- to advantage in, his-semi-final, -gallop for his Cup .engagement'at Avondale, and as "lie has improved after running a- very fair rade in the Fakuranga sprint he may be sufficiently forward to Pu^ uP,^ n f^ iiffht It is only the. doubt about his condition that prevents him from being called a first-rate.=Avondale Cup proposition.' •• '■ ■■■■-•■• . ■ GAIXIO'S PROSPECTS. While the failure of Gallio to run into a place at Wanganui was rather disquieting to his admirers it is more than possible that he will be able to shqw something like the form expected of him at Avondale. He was given a lively - gallop on Tuesday morning at his home centre, and the fact that he went well over five furlongs in heavy ground .was satisfying. It is apparent that he has improved by his trip and the racing at. Wanganui, and it would not be surprising if he were in the money on Saturday. News comes from' Te - Aroha that •Golden Sheila, who claims an engage--meht in the Avondale sprint on Saturday, was lame earlier m the week, although she moved., freely, enough when galloped easily.again yesterday. It is to be hoped that she stands up to her- work, for. the^meeting. of this filly and' Gallio, both being -.fit we'll, with the best of the southern three-year-olds is being, eagerly Girl Pat looks much improved as a result of her parade in public and race at Wanganui and- she may be able to play' a more prominent part in the Avondale Stakes on Saturday. Yesterday morning she showed a brilliant turn of speed while sprinting a couple of furlongs alongside the rails, in heavy going, in 24 3-ssec, which was smart time at Te Awamutu. . A brilliant quarter of a mile by Penzance at Te Rapa yesterday will focus attention noon her Avondale Stakes prospects, her time, 24sec being brilliant on the heavy ground along the back of the course, where the going is always heaviest. Penzance is. a black filly by Martian's son Kaceful from Lady Lois, and if she wins the Avondale Stakes she will.be following in the footsteps of her dam who w.on this classic fifteen years back. . . TRADESMAN WELL. L J.'Ellis will-be on Tradesman in the Avondale Cup, and this mount must be given a fine opportunity of repeating his Jellicoe 'Handicap success-at Ellerslie last month.' The little black fielding did another race-winmn£ gallop at Te Rapa yesterday, running nine furlong's 60ft out from the rails on a heavy track in Zir/iri. 16sec, after being leld back to., .his companion, in .the first -few furlongs. -There is. still, a doubt about.his seeing out a mile ana a quarter in good-company, but -it must be remembered that he went away froni the field In -the- final furlong' 'when he' won.at Ellerslie;' ■' ■ ~' Mr.. A- D. Ppttef,; who Jpst a; ;gooa horse and stakerwiunes'.when Kiltowyn had to be retired a year ago, has.a couple: of promising two-year-olas in Harlech and Bowyang, both \of whom are in the Avondale'Stakes. A. Murray will ride the former and H. Goldfinch will, be on'the .latter, and on their work they may need only a .good run in the big field to show up, at the" finish. Their owner has not always been keen 'on early racing ■ for youngsters, but-they have come on so well that he is inclined to give them their chance, ■ •. '■ •';'■•'■', Riding engagements concerning- the Avondale Cup and Flying.Handicap for Saturday are: H. Wiggins, Mazir and Golden Blonde; L. Clifford, High Tea; R. McTavish, Versant; S/Tremain, Tin Lap; R.-'W. Savage, Royal Secret; E. Peck, ;Red Manfred;- • and N,=. McGuire, Gay Rose;, '; ' . '.'.,'. ' . .
