'CHASING TO FLAT
AVONDALE'S UNIQUE FEAT
The Hon. George Lambton, master of his craft, accomplished something of Which he might well be proud when turning out the eight-year-old mare Avondale . .to win . the Goodwood Stakes, 2 miles 3 furlongs, at the Goodwood Meeting on July 29. The mare was better known as a jumper, and a season ago she was actually favourite for the Irish Grand National Steeplechase.
In writing of the performance, "Meyrick Good" says:—"l have seen some moderate animals.win this race —my uncle, the late Alfred Day, scored in 1911 with the three-year-old Ignition, bought out of a selling race —but I cannot remember having seen a 'chasing mare to the fore before this year." . " . .
Avondale is the property of Lady Helen McCalmont, and is, by the Cesarawitch winner Yutoi out of Mademoiselle Mai, a mare that once won a hurdle race at Shirley. She did not run until she was five years old, when' she scored on the flat and over hurdles in Ireland. In 1934 she won two His Majesty's Plates, and was successful also over fences. Last year she started favourite for the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse, and finished third. Later in the year she was transferred to Newmarket, and was unplaced in a race at the Houghton Meeting. .
