AVONDALE GALLOPS

HOROWHENUA IMPRESSIVE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The going on the course proper was in fairly good order this morning for the' final gallops of candidates for the Avondale Meeting, though a trifle on the holding side. The poles were out 60ft, and no particularly fast times were recorded, the best efforts being those of Horowhenua and Knight of Australia among the Cup horses, and of Kelly, Tooley Street, and Mainland among the sprinters. The first gallop was that of five Cup candidates, Horowhenua, Mazir, Knight of Australia, Te Hai, and Tybalt, who were sent over a round which occupied 2min 12 4-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 36 3-ssec, and the final halfmile in 55 4-ssec. Horowhenua was just in front of Mazir at the finish, with Knight of Australia about a length and a half away, followed by Tybalt and .Te Hai. Horowheniia worked impressively, as also did Knight of Australia. Mazir was kicked right out at the finish. . Fleetwind jumped off just in front of the Cup horses at 'the five furlongs post and led them home, but she was not timed. • . Tin Lap finished in front of Caliente in a three-furlong sprint which occupied 40 2-ssec. Tin Lap did her work very pleasingly. Teddy Boy was well clear of Electric Flash at the conclusion of seven furlongs in lmin 39 4-ssec, the first halfmile in 55 l-ssec. Teddy Boy finished full of running. • ■ Kelly shaded Tooley Street after traversing five furlongs in lmin 6 l-ssec. They ran the first two furlongs in 25 l-ssec, and the time for the full distance was the best of the morning. Lord Val, Master Brierly, and Versant were in that order at the end of a mile in lmin 48 4-ssec. They ran the first half-mile in 52 2-ssec, Versant being in front at this stage, but Lord Val and Master, Brierly finished too solidly for him. Lord Val worked exceptionally well and his condition will stand to him on Saturday. Gay Defence ran home from the three furlongs post in 41 4-ssec. He worked nicely, but was not doing his best. There was nothing between Jewelled Girdle and Royal Appellant after running seven furlongs in lmin 37sec. They covered the first half-mile in 53sec, arid both worked nicely. Landlubber ' was well within himself while running five furlongs in lmin 13sec. . ' • ' : ■ • <• ' Persian Lady and Lady Diana were on terms at the completion of five furlongs in lmin 9 3-ss.ee. They ran the first two in 27 l-ssec, and both finished on well. ';■•■• ■ After, breakfast, Whirlwind had Valspear as a companion over seven furlongs, which took lmin 39 l-ssec, the first three being covered, in 41 4-ss.ee. Survey, with much the worse of the weights,- was holding Hunting Chorus at the finish of half a mile in 53sec. It was a smart effort for these maidens. Don Star, who followed after them, reeled off three furlongs in 4isec, and Silver Sound completed five furlongs in lmin lOsec, after running her first three furlongs in 41sec. ■ Mainland was timed to traverse six furlongs in lmin 22 4-ssec. This also was a good performance. Ruling King was a shade in front of United after covering half a mile in 55 2-ssec. On the two-year-old track, Whakao, who'hails from Gisborne, finished clear of Manatere over three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Whakao has a nice smooth style of galloping. Harlech ran a similar distance in 39sec.
