FURTHER RAIN

A CHANGE TO SOUTHERLY

Special forecast for Wellington:— North-westerly winds strong to gale force, decreasing tonight but changing to strong southerly by tomorrow. Weather unsettled and squally with further rain, heavy at times

and becoming: colder. The general forecast issued at noon today for the Dominion as a whole,,is for moderate to strong north-westerly winds, reaching gale force in places, especially about and south of Cook Strait, backing to westerly and to south-westerlies during the next twenty-four hours. The weather will be unsettled with rain in most districts, some heavy falls being likely in the central provinces and on the west coast of the South Island. Snow is to be expected on the ranges in the South Island; temperatures becoming colder tomorrow. While pressure has remained relatively high to the north a series of depressions continues to cross the South Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Consequently winds between north and west have predominated and have been strong at times, especially about and south of Cook Strait, but for the most part they have been moderate in force. In the southern part of the South Island there have been a number of changes to south-westerly winds at places. Light scattered rain fell yesterday in the western districts from Taranaki southwards and about Cook Strait, but otherwise the weather was fair to fine. During the night, however, rain became more widespread in districts with a westerly aspect, heavy falls occurring at some places, and by this morning cloud had increased over most of the Dominion. Temperatures have remained mild and springlike. Auckland experienced a fine, sunny day yesterday, a south-westerly breeze prevailing. There was a trace of rain during last night, and at 9 a.m. today It was overcast there with a west-north- ] westerly breeze. The weather was mild and dull at ■ Wellington, and during the afternoon ; and night thick, misty conditions pre- , vailed with almost continuous drizz- ( ling rain, accompanied by a moderate ' to strong north to north-west wind. A heavy downpour occurred for ten mm- ] utes preceding 5 a.m. today. The i total fall up to 9 a.m. today was 53 , points.
