FIRST RETURNS
ELECTIONS IN MAINE
REPUBLICAN MAJORITIES
INDICATED
NATIONAL OUTLOOK
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, September 15. | Preliminary returns in the Maine I elections indicated clear Republican I majorities in four of five important I offices, but apparently the victory is not sweeping enough to indicate the national trend towards Mr. A. M. Landon that the Republican Parly leadership hopad for. With approximately half the votes counted, the Republican candidate for the Governorship (Mr. Barrows) has a lead of over 20,000 votes over the Democrat, Mr. Dubord. On the other hand, the Republican, Senator White, has only 8000 votes more than his Demo- j cratic opponent, Mr. Brann.
The Republicans appear to have elected the State's three representatives with moderate majorities.
A cable published on Monday stated that although no national issues are involved in the Maine elections, for a historiccl reason they are of tremendous psychological importance, since it is the only State holding elections in advance of the national elections. The proverb has arisen, "As goes Maine so goes the nation," although this often has not been the case.
