EVIDENCE OF RAILWAYS

Britain's industrial recovery is further illustrated by the railway statistics for last year, issued by the Ministry of Transport, says the "Daily Telegraph." These:show substantial increases in all sections of traffic. Compared with 1934:— Passenger journeys increased by 58,000,000, to 1,697,000,000; and

Goods and mineral traffic increased by 856.844 tons to 270,877,672 tons.

Passenger journeys on the railways owned by the London Transport Board increased by 27,000.000 to 466,000.000.

A'big extension is recorded in the air services operated on behalf of or by arrangement with railway companies. Passenger journeys rose from 2194 to 13,117, and miles flown per machine from 381,301' to 598,183.

While the number of railway-owned passenger, road vehicles fell from 161 to 158,. parcels and goods motors increased from 7699 to 8382. Horsewagons and carts decreased from 27,142 to 26,091, and horses for road vehicles from 13,875 to 13.317.

During the year railway capital expenditure' increased by £2,183,270; to £1,180.098.460. and capital receipts by. £501,389 to £Xi 116.532.097. The excess of capita] expenditure over receipts was ■'■ thus increased from £61,884,482 to -£63.586,363

Gross receipts from railway working totalled £ 157,709,932, an increase of £2,130,972. The total net receipts were'• £30,982,609, an increase of £11518,837. The net revenue amounted to £33,695,058, an increase of £1,440,162.

Expenditure on railway working rose by ■>■£ 626,800 to a total of £ 127,409,818. Salaries and ■ wages, increased by about .£675,000/
