FURIOUS BATTLE

260 MILES FRONT

CRITICAL SITUATION

(Received August 5, 11.30 a.m.)

PORT SAID, August 4. General Tekla Hawariat, who attained prominence in the course of the Italo-Abyssinian "War as Abyssinian Minister in Paris, is in command of a column entrenched to support an attack on the Italians near Addis Ababa, where the situation is reported to have become more critical. A furious battle continues on a front extending from Addis Ababa to Gondar, twenty-five miles north of Lake Tana. The fighting is mostly of a guerrilla nature, except where large forces face one another. It is expected that Addis Ababa will be harried by raiders throughout the rainy season.

The distance between Addis Ababa and Gondar is about 260 miles. ■
