CANADIAN AUTONOMY
TIME HAS ARRIVED
PARTY LEADER'S VIEW
THE DEFENCE ASPECT
(Received August 5, 12.15 p.m.)
TORONTO, August 4. In accepting re-election for the fourth term as Leader of the Canadian. Commonwealth Federation and Leader of that party in the House of Commons, Mr. ,J. S. Woodsworth declared that the time had arrived for Canada to declare her autonomy. The Monroe Doctrine would prevent the y interference in America of any European or Asiatic Power, and consequently there was no necessity for a
large army to protect Canada.
"I don't think we could rely on Britain to protect us," he said. "I acknowledge the great debt we owe to her, but I would not go so far as to say that we owe it to her to help to protect .her."
