LUNCHEON PARTY
ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION
A delightful luncheon party was held in the National Club Rooms yesterday when the English-speaking Union entertained the party of American ladies representing a number of clubs throughout America. The party "is headed by Mrs. Grace Morrison Poole, president of the-Federated Clubs of the United States. Two other guests of honour were Miss Bojjd alia Miss Phillips, who have just arrived in New Zealand to commence a broadcasting tour. '
The' guests were received by Mrs. D. V. Claridge (chairwoman), assisted by Mrs. Hay MacKenzie. The Hon. Wm.XPerjy introduced the guests, and Mrs./Poole gave a most delightful address.
Mrs. Poole said she had joined "the English-speaking Union in Boston many years ago When, it was a very small branch, but that it had 'grown and grown, and was now a large and flourishing centre, entertaining visitors from all over the world. "The Englishspeaking peoples of the world have a great responsibility," said Mrs. Poole. "and if we stand together there is almost .no'task that we cannot do." Mrs. Poole strongly emphasised the need for understanding among nations of the world and showed how much'women could do towards that understanding. "Wherever I travel now," she said,,"l try and make a friend-in that country, and. if there comes a time when I cannot Understand - the attitude of that country I try to 'make my friend show mo,it with-her eyes." Mrs. Poole touched on incidents during her visits to Germany and Czechoslovakia which showed how much could be done by efforts at Understanding. Showing how-foolish warfare was Mrs. Poole "pointed'out .that there was a time when the State from which Mrs. Shirk came and her own State, actually fought one another. Such a situation could i only come -through! lack of understanding,, and today, the need for good will^and understanding was perhaps even greater than ever before in the world., t New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the-United States had great- opportunities 'for helping thfe more troubled-European States as the lookers-on. "Wherever I go," concluded! Mrs. Poole, "I shall preach the gospel of good will and Understanding among the people of the world."- - •
Mr. ,A. Leigh .Hunt, in thanking Mrs. Poble for- a most moving and brilliant address, paid how. much.he,was struck with the ;ieed for' women to take a hand'in the affairs 'pf tlie world.
