QUEEN MARY PICTURE

*A meeting, presided over by Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop (Mayoress of Wellington) was held at the Town Hall on Monday afternoon in furtherance of the project that the women of New Zealand should present a portrait of Queen Mary to the National Art Gallery, Wellington.

The attendance was not large, but considerable enthusiasm was shown by those present. Mrs. Martin, convener for the Island Bay area, reported that over £19 had been collected and paid in so far, ana it was reported on behalf of Mrs. G. P. H. Davidson, convener for Kelburn, that £36 had been received from that district Interim reports were presented by a number oi; other conveners.

The total collected and banked from the whole of the Wellington' district amounts to £100, but it! has to be remembered that the estimated cost of the proposed picture is about £1000 and that .it is expected that this district will raise at least £500, in view of Wellington' being the capital city an° the seat of the National Galjery. The hope was therefore expressed very strongly that all conveners and collectors will-push ahead vigorously with the work in order that Wellington may set a fitting example in this matter to the whole Dominion. The next meeting will take ]}lace in the Mayoress's room at 2 p.m. next Mo.nday, when all members of the executive and all conveners arc asked to be present to report on their activities.
