ANTI-PROFITEERING BILL
The Prevention of Profiteering Billwas considered yesterday by the executive of. the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, when it was decided to communicate with the Minister of Industries and Commerce, advising him that the association, firmly believing that competition between traders will always ensure that goods and services are available to the public at a reasonable price, is definitely opposed to the whole of the Bill.
Because of the Bill having passed its third reading in the House of Representatives, the meeting felt that the Government was by now irretractably committed to the measure, and that no criticism which the association could now offer was likely to prevent the Bill passing into law. It was believed, however, that the measure woiild have no counterpart in any portion of the British Empire.
The meeting, in deciding to convey these views to the Minister, resolved also to urge strongly that the Bill be amended to give adequate right of appeal to the Supreme Court from the decision of the Magistrate.
