FRYER AGAIN TOP

HAWERA'S GOOD SEASON

(Special from "Limited.")

HAWERA, July 31,

During the racing season just closed the Hawera training centre has once again emphasised its importance by turning out winners of stake-money to the amount of over £9000, made up of 49rwins and placings. Three of the [successes have:been in classics, Lowenjberg, trained by O. Cox, winning the New Zealand Derby. Alchemic, trained by J. Fryer, the Wanganui Guineas, and Notium, trained by J. Brown, the 'Taranaki'Stakes.

Of the handicap horses One Whetu and Friesland were the ones to claim most distinction.

One Whetu's improvement as the season progressed was remarkable, as out of his first nin# starts he was successful in winning on' only one occasion. In his subsequent 15 starts he won seven races, was second three times, and third on two occasions, a record of remarkable consistency. In the course of his wins he established two race records, running the mile and a quarter at Feilding in 2min 4 2-ssec and winning the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie in 2min ssec. His stake-winnings amounted to £1620.

Friesland's best performance was in the Thompson Handicap, when he was beaten a head by the champion Silver Ring and thus narrowly missing adding another to the list of Haweratrained horses to win this important mile event. On the second day he accounted for a classy field in the March Handicap, covering the seven furlongs in lmin 25|sec. Fersen failed to run quite up to his previous season's form, but proved his stamina by running fourth in the New Zealand Cup and third in the Auckland Cup.

Soloist proved himself a class hurdler by carrying heavy weights to victory in the north during the autumn.

Though • the centre did not have many two-year-olds, three proved themselves capable of holding their own in the top class. Notium was narrowly beaten in the Wellesley Stakes by Pelmet, who subsequently won the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, and later he finished third in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and won the Taranaki Stakes.

Before meeting an untimely end, Gay Chief was a veritable bulldog; starting no less than 19 times for four wins and eight placings. Ned Cuttle won two handicap races, and Brilliancy was several times placed. Supreme Court was. the best performer among the hacks, winning three races:in best hack company and losing his: eligibility for future hack races. He was followed by Corowa and Le Grand, .both improving horses and likely to lose hack status early in the new season, .vy-;''

Among" the trainers J. Fryer was again the leader, whh 27 wins to his credit and a total of £4226 10s in stake-winnings. O. Cox was second with six successes and £2217 10s in stake-winnings. ... . '~-■'
