NO GAY FASHIONS
RULES FOR SCHOOLGIRLS
In Smyrna, will have no gay fashions to look forward to in future (states the London correspondent of the "Sydney Morning Herald").
The Directorate of Public Education there has drawn up ten commandments for all the really "nice" girls. The directorate exercises influence over all the girls at local schools, and they have set down what they believe will be helpful rules for all girls under 16 years of age.
Here they are:— 1. Don't use lipstick, rouge, face cream, or any other kind of makeup.
2. Don't varnish, shape, or otherwise "waste time" attending to your fingernails. 3. Don't let your clothes make you conspicuous. Avoid low necks. 4. Don't wear shoes'with high heels. 5. Don't wear any kind of jewellery.
6. Don't go to the cinema unaccompanied. 7. Don't allow any man to walk with you—except your father or brother.
8. Don't hesitate to report at once to the authorities any man who speaks to you in the streets. 9. Don't play, any games outside the school grounds. 10. Don't wear any hat other than the school hat. The girls concerned have received the rules with singular disfavour.
