BUILDING BOOM

MERCHANT SHIPPING

BUSIEST SINCE 1930

LONDON, July 15.

Mr. H. C. Bywater, in the "Daily Telegraph," commenting on Lloyd's shipbuilding returns, which show 848,732 tons' of new merchant shipping under construction at June 30, points out that this is not only the highest since 1930, but exceeds the aggregate tonnage now building in the four leading countries abroad.

Every British shipyard capable of naval construction will be fully occupied by the end of the year. In addition to the sister-ship to the Queen Mary, the Cunard-White Star line is spending £10,000,000 in constructing eight liners of from 14,000 to 30,000 tons. .;

The situation iriv Britain contrasts with that in France, where the strike of 10,000 workers at St, Nazaire is still holding up the French naval programme. ;
